Birds & Smalltalk is a humorous interdisciplinary performance that explores parallels between human and bird behaviour in urban environments. First developed by Kunstgrillen in 2021, it combines live music, dance, acrobatics, stilts and interactive elements to create a site-responsive, sensory experience in public spaces. Colourful, inventive costumes and live sound design invite children to explore and help create the performance alongside the artists.

Kunstgrillen is a collective of artists from five different countries, formed in response to the COVID restrictions in 2020. Originally made as a fast-art delivery concept for urban spaces. Since then, the collective has developed several site-specific performances, placing improvisation and the inclusion of local residents and passers-by at the heart of its work. Birds & Smalltalk is one of our main productions which has been adapted for a younger audience.

Birds & Smalltalk aims to offer audiences poetic perspectives on everyday life in public spaces and encourage reflection on urban coexistence, environmental awareness and humanity’s relationship with nature. The project challenges traditional ideas of human superiority and invites audiences to see the world through new eyes, both as individuals and as members of society.

Birds & Smalltalk was first created as a site-responsive impro-stunt by Kunstgrillen in 2021. In 2024 it was co-produced by RAS and Kammermusikkfestivalen, and re-created into a 40 minute performance for kids (4-8 y/o) and families. After premiering in byparken/Ruten in Sandnes, the piece toured in Haugesund, Bergen and Førde in 2024. In 2026 we performed the piece for kids and families at Ranglerock festival/Bryne.
